Employee Welfare

Our mission statement ascribes that “our most important asset are our employees, their families, health, housing and welfare in general”.

We provide salaries and benefits to our employees that are above the recommended rates of the Kenyan government. For employees that are housed on the premises, Magana Flowers provide electricity, clean water and kitchen gardens. For employees who live outside of the farm a housing allowance is provided. We also have a medical clinic within the premises to care for our all our employees and their immediate families.
A social hall for social activities e.g. games, meeting, television, training and other facilities are provided for our employees.
In addition, we are very strict with our protective clothing policy. All employees are required to wear protective clothing during working hours. These are issued to employees in accordance to the policy. Protective clothing includes dustcoats or overalls and gumboots. Depending on what department and employee is in, additional protective clothing e.g.: gloves, masks etc maybe required. These too are provided promptly by the company. Shower rooms with hot water facilities are provided for our employees.

At Magana, each and every employee is considered part of the Magana family. Having happy and motivated employees is crucial to having them wholeheartedly contribute towards producing high quality flowers. Magana Flowers Kenya Limited is committed to having happy, satisfied and motivated employees.








Clinic
Magana Flowers has constructed a fully fledged free clinic that caters to all employees and their immediate families. A well trained medical doctor and nurse run this clinic. The clinic carries out curative, preventative and educational medicinal practices. It conducts lessons in hygiene, offers immunization for children, vaccinations such as typhoid and hepatitis B for employees and their families, and organizes continuous family planning sessions. The clinic is located within the premises of the farm.



Training
Training programs are conducted by the company or outside consultants on a regular basis thus educating and updating our employees on the latest developments in the flower industry, the environment and personal development. Training is open and free to all pertinent employees. Training programs (to name a few) include:
• Leadership and Capacity Building
• HIV/AIDS Education
• Safe use of pesticides and application methodology
• Scouting and Reporting
• Understanding Industrial Relations and Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBA)
Magana Flowers also provides training to college students in form of internships. Every year, more than 10 students from Kenyan universities and overseas universities join Magana Flowers for 3 to 4 months, to obtain practical training in certain areas of the company’s operations.

Sports and Entertainment
For those endowed with sporting acumen Magana Flowers offers a choice of sporting activities such as football, volleyball, pool and darts. The Magana Football Club currently competes with other football teams at the local level. Apart from the main football club, there are two women’s football teams that have been know to beat the men in matches every now and again. In addition a social hall has been constructed within the premises to cater to the entertainment of our employees. This hall allows for employees to socialize and relax during their leisure time while watching television, playing darts and pool.







Co-operative Store
Employees at Magana Flowers currently have a co-operative store where they can shop for items at discounted prices. In addition, employees have credit facilities extended to them allowing them to settle their bills at the end of the month when they get paid. Items include: hygiene products, cooked food, batteries etc. This shop is located within the premises.



Co-operative Society
Magana Flowers encourages its employees to save and invest in their future. As such Magana assisted its employees in setting up a saving co-operative for those employees who are keen on generating personal wealth. The Magana Sacco Society was registered on April 6th 1996 and is free for employees to join. In addition to savings, members are eligible for loans approved by the Sacco committee which is comprised of elected members of the employee population by the employee themselves.




Protective Clothing
At Magana all employees must wear protective clothing while at work. All protective clothing is issued by the company. Depending on the type of work performed, protective clothing may be issued annually, semi-annually, quarterly, monthly, daily, weekly or when necessary.




Day Care
Magana Flowers Kenya Limited has constructed a Daycare Center. This will allow the employees to drop off their children with qualified, experienced and nurturing daycare staff, while they proceed to work. We believe that having our employees’ children taken care of will create in them a sense of security and wellbeing that will enable them to be more productive, motivated and happy.


Locker Rooms
Magana Flowers has provided its employees with locker rooms for them to store their clothes and lunch prior to reporting to work in the morning. Each employee has their own individual locker. The locker rooms are divided first according to gender, then according to the department that each employee is a member of. This ensures safekeeping of our employees’ property while they are at work.


Dinning Hall
In addition, dinning hall facilities have been provided. In bad weather, employees’ have a sheltered area in which they can eat their lunch. We also have picnic sites all around the farm that employees currently use as their lunch areas.
